Course Description

OSHA (29 CFR 1910.120(q) and 1926.59(q)) has two levels of training beyond the HazMat Technician level, namely, the HazMat Specialist and the Incident Commander level. Our Emergency Response technician course combines both of these specialties and provides trainees with the full knowledge of the duties and actions which can be taken by Incident Commanders and HazMat Specialists. Incident Commanders are in overall charge of the incident and HazMat Specialists serve as the lead responder in charge of the entry and back up teams. Their roles are described more fully in the section on Emergency Response Team Organization.

OSHA requires that incident commanders receive a minimum of 16 hours of training beyond the First Responder Operations level course. However, we do not offer a minimal 24-hour incident commander course because in our judgment it is important for all incident commanders to receive the Hazardous Materials Technician training: you should not be directing the activities of responders unless you know the options available to them and the limitations placed on them by the personal protective equipment that they use.

There is no training beyond the 24-hour technician training for HazMat Specialists, but since OSHA defines them as a having a liaison function, we feel that it is important that they be trained in the same topics as the person in charge. Thus, our HAZWOPER Professional course is a 40-hour course rather than a shorter course allowed by the law.

Note: If you have already had a 24-hour or longer HazMat Technician class you may wish to complete your training by enrolling in our Incident Commander Completion Course.
