Certification Information:

As detailed on our HAZWOPER Home Page, OSHA requires that employers provide all persons conducting certain types of work with the appropriate initial and annual refresher training so that they can continue to perform their duties. These courses can be offered by the employer or by a training program such as ours.

The OSHA HAZWOPER standards (29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.59) requires training for employees who might be exposed to a DOT hazardous material or a biological hazard while performing three types of work:

  1. conducting cleanups at a government-recognized waste site;
  2. working at a RCRA-permitted hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facility (TSDF); or
  3. performing emergency response to a potential or actual release.

OSHA specifies that workers in the first two categories have an 8-hour annual refresher, but the specific number of training hours is notspecified for emergency responders. Contrary to what you may have heard, OSHA does not have a course approval system, however, the Institute courses cover all of the elements required by 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1926.59.

In addition, the Institute is one of the programs participating in the Midwest Consortium for Hazardous Waste Worker Training, funded by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS, grant #ES06184), so we can offer you high quality HAZWOPER training at an attractive cost. The Consortium course materials are consistent best-sellers at the NIEHS website.
